BABYLONArchaelogical Site

The Babylon Archaeological Site, located about 85 km south of Baghdad (Iraq), is an exceptional testimony to one of the most influential civilizations of the ancient world. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019, the location preserves the remains of a city that served as the capital for successive empires under rulers like Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar II.

During the 1980s, Saddam Hussein ordered extensive controversial reconstructions over ancient foundations, often using modern bricks inscribed with his own name. The site suffered significant damage in 2003 when it was used as a military base by US-led coalition forces. Today, only approximately 15-18% of the ancient city has been excavated.

Key Highlights

- Ishtar Gate: A modern replica welcomes visitors, as the 6th-century BC original is housed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
- Processional Way: A ceremonial avenue once flanked by reliefs of lions and dragons, used for religious festivals like the Akitu.
- Lion of Babylon: A famous black basalt statue and national emblem of Iraq that can still be seen in situ.
- Etemenanki (Ziggurat of Marduk): The remains of a monumental tower often associated with the biblical story of the Tower of Babel.
- Southern Palace of Nebuchadnezzar II: Partially reconstructed during the 20th century, it includes what is believed to be the throne room where Alexander the Great died.
